Malawi Bicycle Project
Type of Project: Transport
Request: Transport bikes from England to Malawi, Africa
Location(s): East Sussex, England to Malawi, Africa
Recipient: World in Need – Malawi (Pastor Kadango)
The Executive Director of World in Need (Malawi), Pastor Davies Kadango, informed Trade Palms of his organization’s desire to repair and sell used bicycles as a creative way to create jobs and support their ministry. Through other World in Need connections, Trade Palms was made aware of a gentleman in East Sussex, England who had 150 unwanted, used bikes stored in an old barn. Trade Palms jumped at the opportunity to fulfill the request of WIN-Malawi and arranged for an overseas shipping container to be dropped at Crowborough, England where the bikes were loaded and then shipped to Malawi.
Although the project did not result in the expected outcome of a full service bike repair shop, the bikes were used in creative ways to support the ministry in Malawi. Several bikes were donated to local orphan groups, while other bicycles were exchanged for paddy rice. Bicycle sales resulted in the purchase of food for distribution and a portion of proceeds were used for Evangelistic Leadership Seminars.
